The Australian Government has opened a public consultation on changing the legal definition of an “NDIS provider” in the NDIS Act. While this may sound technical, it has significant implications for people with disability and our families, including who we can choose to support us, how safeguards apply, and how flexible the NDIS remains in practice.

This online session will explain what the consultation is about, why the Government is proposing changes, and what this could mean on the ground for participants, families, and those involved in delivering supports.

We will be joined by a guest speaker from the Department of Health, who will outline the purpose of the consultation and what the Government is seeking feedback on.

Just as importantly, this session is a chance for our community to raise concerns early, before settings are locked in. How “NDIS provider” is defined will influence which services and supports fall inside the regulated NDIS system, who must register, and what unregistered providers participants can continue to access.

What we will cover

  • What the current definition of an NDIS provider is, and why it is being reviewed
  • What the Government means by a risk-based approach to regulation
  • Which types of supports may be included or excluded under a new definition
  • What this could mean for choice and control, flexibility, and safeguards
  • How individuals and organisations can have their say during the consultation.

The session will be a chance to:

✅ unpack what the proposed changes could mean for self-management and self-direction

✅ hear directly from you about what you like and don’t like, concerns, ideas, and unintended consequences that you want the government to consider

✅ use your lived experience to help shape the Self Manager Hub submission to Government.

Who should attend

  • NDIS participants and family members
  • People who self-manage or self-direct supports
  • Anyone wanting to understand how this consultation could shape the future of the NDIS.
